What Are the Warmest Cities in Wyoming?
In this article I’m going to share with you my ranking of the warmest places in Wyoming.
I created my list by researching data provided by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and other climate data providers.
Below I’m listing the top 10 warmest places in Wyoming that have the highest average yearly temperatures. Later in the article I share a table with 30 most populous cities in Wyoming.
Top 10 Warmest Cities in Wyoming
Here are the top 10 warmest places in Wyoming ranked by their daily mean temperature. While the following ten cities have relatively similar average annual temperatures, the warmest place (Wheatland) is over 11 degrees warmer than the coldest town (Pinedale).
For the top five cities I also give average winter and summer temperatures.
1. Wheatland – daily mean temperature of 49 °F
The town of Wheatland in the southeastern part of the state is the warmest city in Wyoming, though the second warmest place (Basin) has almost exactly the same annual daily mean temperature. Wheatland has by far the highest average high temperature (65 °F) which means it features the hottest days out of all cities in this ranking.
The warmest town in Wyoming has the mildest winters, with average 43-45 °F during the day and 16-17 °F at night. In the summer, average daytime temperatures reach 83-90 °F. At night, they drop to cool 48-54 °F—the lowest nighttime temperatures in the summer on this list. Wheatland gets 18 days of snow with 40 inches of average annual snowfall a year.

2. Basin – daily mean temperature of 48.95 °F
Basin, a town located in the northern part of the state in the Bighorn Basin, has almost exactly the same daily mean temperature as Wheatland but it features much colder winters. Average highs are just 32-39 °F while lows drop to freezing cold 9-15 °F. The reason why Basin still ranks second is because it has very hot daytime temperatures during the hottest part of the year. They reach 84-93 °F during the day and drop to 55-60 °F at night.
According to weather data, Basin holds the record for the maximum temperatures registered in Wyoming (115 °F on August 8, 1983). It also has the highest recorded temperature in April and July.
Winter temperatures: highs of 32-39 °F, lows of 9-15 °F
Summer temperatures: highs of 84-93 °F, lows of 55-60 °F
3. Thermopolis – daily mean temperature of 48.55 °F
The small town of Thermopolis is located 61 miles south of Basin. According to weather data collected by the National Weather Service, Thermopolis has milder winters than Basin, with temperatures reaching 37-42 °F during the day and 12-16 °F at night. At 50-57 °F, the town has colder summer nights which makes hot summer days more bearable.

Summer temperatures: highs of 83-92 °F, lows of 50-57 °F
4. Torrington – daily mean temperature of 47.55 °F
Torrington is a city of 6,500 residents, located in the southeastern part of the state, 8 miles from the border with Nebraska. While it has very cold winter nights with temperatures between 10-15 °F, it features some of the mildest winter temperatures during the day. It has slightly cooler average high temperatures in the summer, in the range of 82-89 °F.

Summer temperatures: highs of 82-89 °F, lows of 50-56 °F
5. Newcastle – daily mean temperature of 47.3 °F
Newcastle is a small city in the northeastern part of the state, close to the border with South Dakota. It has cold winters with the average temperature of around 35-38 °F during the day and cooler summers with highs of 78-87 °F.
Winter temperatures: highs of 35-38 °F, lows of 14-16 °F
Summer temperatures: highs of 78-87 °F, lows of 53-60 °F
6. Cheyenne – daily mean temperature of 46.9 °F
The largest city in Wyoming, Cheyenne, is the sixth warmest city in the state. According to weather stations, Cheyenne gets the highest snowfall out of all cities in this ranking. It reaches 63 inches, with snow falling on average 45 days a year, between October and even up to May.
Temperature-wise, Cheyenne has the least extreme year round climate out of all places in this ranking. The average temperature on a winter day is between 39-40 °F. At night, temperatures drop to 18 °F. In the summer, Cheyenne enjoys warm but not oppressively hot weather, with highs of 77-84 °F. The city is sunny year round, getting 2,982 sunshine hours a year.
7. Gillette – daily mean temperature of 46.85 °F
Gillette is the third most populous city in the Cowboy State. It’s located in the northeastern part of the state. At 55.7 average inches of snowfall a year, it’s the snowiest town after Cheyenne. The average temperature in Gillette reaches 36-37 °F on a winter day and 77-86 °F on a summer day.
8. Cody – daily mean temperature of 46.85 °F
Cody is a city of 10,000 people in northwest Wyoming, the closest distance from Yellowstone National Park. It has the coolest summers on this list, with temperatures between 75-84 °F. It still has relatively mild winters, though, with average highs of 38-39 °F.
9. Douglas – daily mean temperature of 45.75 °F
Douglas, a city of 6,000 residents, is located in Eastern Wyoming, roughly halfway between Cheyenne and Gillette. Its daytime temperatures are similar to that of Gillette while nights are much colder, with temperatures even 6 degrees lower in the coldest month (January).
10. Worland – daily mean temperature of 45.7 °F
The small city of Worland lies on the Bighorn River in the Bighorn Basin, 30 miles south of Basin. Worland has the coldest winters in this ranking, particularly at night when temperatures drop to extremely cold 4-10 °F. It has hot summer days like Basin, with temperatures of 82-91 °F. Average lows in the summer are cool, dropping to 51-57 °F.

I created the table below by researching data for the most populous municipalities in Wyoming. When I couldn’t find data for a given city, I moved on to another. While the list includes 30 cities, some of the bigger cities may be missing because there was no data for them. Please check the closest geographically city then.
