What Are the Warmest Cities in Idaho?

What Are the Warmest Cities in Idaho?

In this article I’m going to share with you my ranking of the warmest places in Idaho.

I created my list by researching data provided by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and other climate data providers.

Below I’m listing the top 10 warmest places in Idaho that have the highest average yearly temperatures. Later in the article I share a table with 50 most populous cities in Idaho.

Top 10 Warmest Cities in Idaho

Warmest Idaho Cities

Here are the top 10 warmest places in Idaho ranked by their daily mean temperature. The differences between these cities are small. But still, their average temperature is noticeably higher than the average for all the cities (46.74 °F). Eastern Idaho is not featured in the top 10 because it’s generally much colder than the western and southwestern part of the state.

For the top five cities I also give average winter and summer temperatures.

1. Lewiston – daily mean temperature of 53.75 °F

The hottest city in Idaho is Lewiston. It’s the second largest city in northern Idaho and ninth largest in the entire state. Lewiston is located on the border with Washington. It has a semi-arid climate with hot, dry summers (average highs of 90-93 °F) and short, cold winters (average highs of 41-42 °F in the coldest month).

Its yearly average temperature is the highest for all the major Idaho cities included in this article. When compared to Boise, the second warmest city in Idaho, the difference is negligible, though. So if you’re looking for the warmest weather, both places are good options.

Winter temperatures: highs of 41-47 °F, lows of 30-32 °F

Summer temperatures: highs of 79-91 °F, lows of 54-61 °F

2. Boise – daily mean temperature of 53.15 °F

The second hottest city in Idaho is the biggest city of the state: Boise. Located in the Treasure Valley in Southwest Idaho, Boise has similar weather to Lewiston, only it has cooler winters (by 3 degrees) and slightly hotter (by 1-2 degrees) summers. Meridian, the second most populous city in Idaho, is only slightly cooler than Boise.

As for other bigger cities in the state, Boise has a yearly average temperature higher by 2.65 °F than Nampa and 8.95 °F than Idaho Falls (Idaho Falls is one of the coldest cities in the state). Besides having some of the warmest weather in the state, Boise, with almost 3,000 sunshine hours a year, is also one of the sunniest cities in the United States.

Winter temperatures: highs of 39-46 °F, lows of 25-29 °F

Summer temperatures: highs of 81-93 °F, lows of 54-62 °F

3. Meridian – daily mean temperature of 52.5 °F

The third warmest place in Idaho is Meridian, just 12 miles west of Boise. Because of proximity, these two cities share almost exactly the same climate. Meridian has just slightly lower temperatures year round. The climate data comes from two different providers, though, so the difference in reality may be non-existent.

Winter temperatures: highs of 37-45 °F, lows of 24-28 °F

Summer temperatures: highs of 81-91 °F, lows of 54-60 °F

4. Glenns Ferry – daily mean temperature of 52.15 °F

Glenns Ferry is a small town of 1,300 inhabitants located 70 miles southeast of Boise. While the town has slightly higher daytime temperatures in the winter, it has much colder nights. As for summers, it has much hotter daytime temperatures, reaching 94-97 °F in the hottest month. If you’re looking for the best average summer temperature in the state, Glenns Ferry isn’t it.

Winter temperatures: highs of 42-50 °F, lows of 22-26 °F

Summer temperatures: highs of 88-97 °F, lows of 52-57 °F

5. Caldwell – daily mean temperature of 52.05 °F

Caldwell, the fifth most populous city in Idaho, is situated about 28 miles west of Boise. Its weather is also similar to Boise, with the most notable difference being slightly colder winters with average highs of 37-38 °F in the coldest month compared to 39 °F in Boise.

Winter temperatures: highs of 37-46 °F, lows of 21-26 °F

Summer temperatures: highs of 84-93 °F, lows of 53-58 °F

6. Weiser – daily mean temperature of 51.8 °F

Weiser is a town of about 5,500 residents, located 71 miles northwest of Boise, on the border with Oregon. Its winters are noticeably cooler than in Boise, reaching 35-36 °F during the day (3-4 degrees colder). Summers are 1-2 degrees cooler.

7. Emmett – daily mean temperature of 51.6 °F

Emmett is another small town close to Boise, located about 30 miles northwest of the city. Emmett has a population of 7,000 people. It features a climate that offers slightly warmer average temperature in the winter compared to Weiser and slightly cooler summers than both Weiser and Boise.

8. Orofino – daily mean temperature of 50.95 °F

Orofino is the second city in this ranking located in northern Idaho. It’s not far from Lewiston: just 43 miles east. Orofino has twice as much precipitation as Lewiston, with much more snow as well. Winter daytime temperatures are about 3 degrees lower than in Lewiston, while summers are more comfortable, with temperatures lower by about 2 degrees.

9. Kamiah – daily mean temperature of 50.95 °F

Kamiah is located about 23 miles south of Orofino. While yearly daily mean temperature is the same for both places, Kamiah has slightly warmer daytime temperatures in winters as well as hotter summers. What’s lower in Kamiah is average lows (nighttime temperatures) in spring and fall.

10. Nampa – daily mean temperature of 50.5 °F

For the last city in this ranking we’re back to southern Idaho and yet another city close to Boise. Nampa is located about 20 miles west of Boise, with Meridian roughly half the distance from both cities. Nampa has slightly lower temperatures than Boise, particularly in the colder months. Even though Nampa ranks tenth in this list, it’s still 12.5 °F warmer than the coldest city in Idaho, Sun Valley and Ketchum.
