What Are the Warmest Cities in Massachusetts?
In this article I’m going to share with you my ranking of the warmest places in Massachusetts.
I created my list by researching data provided by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and other climate data providers.
Below I’m listing the top 10 warmest places in Massachusetts that have the highest average yearly temperatures. Later in the article I share a table with 50 most populous cities in Massachusetts.
Top 10 Warmest Cities in Massachusetts
Here are the top 10 warmest places in Massachusetts ranked by their daily mean temperature. The differences between these major cities are not that big but they’re noticeably warmer than the coldest cities of the state. You won’t find extreme heat or avoid freezing temperatures anywhere in the state but you can find milder weather with a more tolerable winter.
For the top five cities I also give average winter and summer temperatures.
1. Plymouth – daily mean temperature of 52.55 °F
The coastal city of Plymouth is the warmest city in Massachusetts. Like other places on the East Coast, its coastal location moderates its climate. In the case of the Bay State, it gives it the highest annual average temperature in the state. It also has the mildest winters with highs of 41-46 °F and lows of 22-28 °F. In the summer, its highs are between 78-84 °F and lows are between 58-64 °F. Snow falls between December and March.
Despite being the warmest city in Massachusetts, it’s New Bedford that has the highest recorded temperature in the state (107 °F).
Winter temperatures: highs of 41-46 °F, lows of 22-28 °F
Summer temperatures: highs of 79-84 °F, lows of 58-64 °F
2. New Bedford – daily mean temperature of 52.4 °F
New Bedford is a city on the Buzzards Bay, 32 miles southeast of Providence, Rhode Island. The main difference between Plymouth and New Bedford is that the latter has colder winters (during the day) and hotter summers (at night).
Winter temperatures: highs of 38-43 °F, lows of 22-28 °F
Summer temperatures: highs of 78-84 °F, lows of 60-67 °F
3. Weymouth – daily mean temperature of 52.05 °F
Weymouth, located 17 miles southeast of Boston, features a climate like Plymouth, only in the coldest months it has slightly lower temperatures. Summer temperatures are roughly the same. As is the case with most cities in this ranking, the differences are small. But they all offer some of the best weather in the state if you want to avoid low temperatures.
Winter temperatures: highs of 39-43 °F, lows of 21-26 °F
Summer temperatures: highs of 79-85 °F, lows of 58-64 °F
4. Norwood – daily mean temperature of 51.95 °F
Norwood is located 23 miles southwest of downtown Boston. It has the same winters as Weymouth but has hotter summers. Daily highs are 2 degrees higher in the summer. This makes it have a more extreme climate.
Winter temperatures: highs of 40-44 °F, lows of 21-26 °F
Summer temperatures: highs of 80-86 °F, lows of 57-63 °F
5. Boston – daily mean temperature of 51.9 °F
The most populous city of Massachusetts is the fifth warmest city in the state. Due to its coastal location, like Plymouth, it experiences milder weather. Its winters are noticeably cooler than in Plymouth, though. While Plymouth experiences highs of 41-46 °F and lows of 22-28 °F, Boston gets highs of 37-42 °F and lows of 23-29 °F. Boston gets more snow and less rain than Plymouth. Despite cold weather, Boston enjoys a relatively sunny climate. Sun shines at least 50% of the time even in the cloudiest month (November) and 63-65% of the time in the sunniest months of June, July, August, and September.

Winter temperatures: highs of 37-42 °F, lows of 23-29 °F
Summer temperatures: highs of 76-82 °F, lows of 60-66 °F
6. Brockton – daily mean temperature of 51.45 °F
Brockton is another city in the Boston area. It lies 25 miles south of the city. While it has an annual daily mean temperature that gives is the sixth spot on this list, it’s the second windiest city in the United States with an average wind speed of 14.3 mph. Even if it gets milder winter temperatures, the strong wind makes it much colder, particularly when the temperatures are below freezing.
7. Brookline – daily mean temperature of 51.45 °F
Brookline forms a core part of the Boston Metropolitan Area, lying just 5 miles southwest of downtown Boston. As expected with such close proximity, the cities have virtually the same climate, with Brookline having just slightly cooler winters.
8. Hingham – daily mean temperature of 51.3 °F
Hingham is a small town located on the Hingham Bay, close to Wompatuck State Park and 17 miles southeast of Boston. Its weather differs from Boston in the winter with daytime highs higher by one degree and in the summer with slightly warmer days and 2-3 degrees cooler nights.
9. Taunton – daily mean temperature of 51.05 °F
Taunton lies 38 miles south of Boston and is one of the few cities on this list that’s not on the coast or close to it. Its average daytime temperatures are higher by 2 degrees than in Boston but its nighttime averages are lower by 3 degrees.
10. Springfield – daily mean temperature of 51 °F
Springfield, the third most populous city in the state, is the only city on this list that doesn’t belong to the Greater Boston Area. Springfield has colder winters and hotter summers. It gets slightly more snow and rain than Boston. Despite its distance from the moderating effect of the coast, the city still enjoys relatively mild weather compared to other places in the state.
