In this article I’m going to share with you my ranking of the warmest places in West Virginia.

I created my list by researching data provided by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and other climate data providers.

Below I’m listing the top 10 warmest places in West Virginia that have the highest average yearly temperatures. Later in the article I share a table with 30 most populous cities in West Virginia.

Here are the top 10 warmest places in West Virginia ranked by their daily mean temperature.

For the top five cities I also give average winter and summer temperatures.

1. Williamson – daily mean temperature of 57.75 °F

According to weather data collected by NOAA, Williamson, a small city of 3,000 people in the southwestern part of the state, is the warmest city in West Virginia. Williamson is located on the Tug Fork River on the border with Kentucky.

The high temperature in the winter is between 47-51 °F, while the low temperature drops to 26-30 °F. The coldest temperature can drop even further, with the record low temperature dropping all the way to -16 °F. In the summer, Williamson’s average temperature is 85-89 °F during the day and 63-67 °F at night. Its average snowfall is 13.1 inches a year.

At 69.5 °F, Williamson has by far the highest average high temperature in the state. The city’s average weather, compared to other locations in this ranking, features temperatures up to 6 degrees Fahrenheit higher.

Summer temperatures: highs of 85-89 °F, lows of 63-67 °F

2. Huntington – daily mean temperature of 56.45 °F

The second warmest city in West Virginia is over a degree cooler than Williamson. With 47,000 residents, Huntington is the second largest city in the state, forming the largest metropolitan area in West Virginia spanning three states (where 360,000 people live).

Lying on the northern limits of a humid subtropical climate, Huntington has mild winters with average temperatures between 43-47 °F and lows of 26-30 °F. Summer months are hot, with average daytime temperatures of 83-86 °F and nighttime temperatures of 62-66 °F.

3. Charleston – daily mean temperature of 56.15 °F

Charleston is the capital and the most populous city in West Virginia. Weather data indicates temperatures that are similar to Huntington, with winter daytime temperatures higher by a degree.

Winter temperatures: highs of 44-48 °F, lows of 26-30 °F

Summer temperatures: highs of 83-86 °F, lows of 62-66 °F

4. Madison – daily mean temperature of 56.1 °F

Madison is a small city of 3,000 people, situated 31 miles southwest of Charleston. As the almost imperceptible difference in daily mean temperatures indicates, Madison and Charleston have very similar temperatures. The main difference is that Madison has days that are warmer by a degree and nights that are colder by a degree.

Winter temperatures: highs of 45-49 °F, lows of 25-28 °F

Summer temperatures: highs of 84-87 °F, lows of 61-65 °F

5. Point Pleasant – daily mean temperature of 56 °F

Point Pleasant is another small town on this list. It has 4,000 residents. Located 54 miles northwest of Charleston, it lies on the Ohio River on the border with Ohio. According to weather data provided by Weatherbase, it has hotter summer than the previous cities, with average high temperatures going to 86-89 °F.

Summer temperatures: highs of 86-89 °F, lows of 60-64 °F

6. Petersburg – daily mean temperature of 55.9 °F

Petersburg is a town of 2,000 residents, located in northeastern West Virginia. It has some of the mildest winter temperatures in the state, with average highs of 46-49 °F. At 34 inches of precipitation a year, it has the driest climate on this list.

7. Princeton – daily mean temperature of 55 °F

Princeton is a small city where 6,000 people live. It’s located in Southern West Virginia, 13 miles from the border with Virginia. It has the most moderate climate in the state. Winters are mild, with temperatures between 42-46 °F. Summers are noticeably cooler than in other cities, with temperatures between 79-81 °F. Princeton also has some of the warmest nighttime temperatures.

8. Ravenswood – daily mean temperature of 55 °F

Ravenswood lies on the Ohio River, in the western part of West Virginia, 50 miles north of Charleston. This small city of 4,000 inhabitants has similar daytime temperatures to the previous cities (except for cooler Princeton). It differs when it comes to low temperatures, which are up to 4 degrees Fahrenheit lower.

9. Ripley – daily mean temperature of 54.9 °F

Ripley, a city of 3,000 people, is located 37 miles north of Charleston and 12 miles south of Ravenswood. It has a very similar climate to the latter, with slightly warmer average high temperatures and slightly cooler nights.

10. Parkersburg – daily mean temperature of 54.25 °F

Parkersburg is the tenth warmest city in the Mountain State and the third largest city of the state. It has the coldest winters out of all ten cities in this ranking, reaching 40-44 °F during the day and 24-28 °F at night. Its summer temperatures are between 82-85 °F during the day and 60-64 °F at night. Parkersburg gets 2,259 sunshine hours a year.

I created the table below by researching data for the most populous municipalities in West Virginia. When I couldn’t find data for a given city, I moved on to another. While the list includes 30 cities, some of the bigger cities may be missing because there was no data for them. Please check the closest geographically city then.
