What Are the Warmest Cities in Maine?
In this article I’m going to share with you my ranking of the warmest places in Maine.
I created my list by researching data provided by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and other climate data providers.
Below I’m listing the top 10 warmest places in Maine that have the highest average yearly temperatures. Later in the article I share a table with 30 most populous cities in Maine.
Top 10 Warmest Cities in Maine
Here are the top 10 warmest places in Maine ranked by their daily mean temperature. The warmest ten cities have very similar temperatures, while the difference between the warmest city of Maine (Portland) compared to the coldest (Houlton) is 7 degrees Fahrenheit.
For the top five cities I also give average winter and summer temperatures.
1. Portland – daily mean temperature of 47.5 °F
Portland, the largest city in Maine and one of the largest metropolitan areas in New England, is located on the Maine coast. With its climate moderated by the Atlantic Ocean, it’s the warmest city in the state. It has the mildest winters in the state. It still has a very cold season, though, with temperatures just above freezing during the day (32-38 °F). Nights bring much colder temperatures of 16-22 °F. Average annual snowfall is around 68.7 inches, spread over 29 snowy days. Early spring may still carry with it occasional snow.
Summer months in Portland bring warm weather with average high temperatures of 74-80 °F and lows of 55-61 °F. For that reason, June to August is the best period to visit Maine. Portland sees 2,512 sunshine hours a year, with sunshine spread evenly year round.

2. Bar Harbor – daily mean temperature of 47.1 °F
According to NOAA’s weather data, Bar Harbor is the second warmest city in Maine. It’s a resort town of 5,000 people, located by the Acadia National Park on the Mount Desert Island. While it has similar daytime temperatures as Portland, the average temperature at night there is up to 2 degrees lower.
Winter temperatures: highs of 31-37 °F, lows of 14-21 °F
Summer temperatures: highs of 74-79 °F, lows of 54-59 °F
3. Sanford – daily mean temperature of 47 °F
Sanford is a city of 22,000 people. It’s situated 35 miles southwest of Portland and 13 miles from the border with New Hampshire. Winters in Sanford have the same daily temperatures as Portland but nights are up to 4 degrees colder, between 12-18 °F. Sanford gets hotter summer days, with temperatures between 78-83 °F.

Summer temperatures: highs of 78-83 °F, lows of 52-58 °F
4. Gray – daily mean temperature of 46.35 °F
Gray, located 18 miles north of Portland, is a town of 8,300 people. It has similar summer temperatures to Portland. Winter days are colder though, with temperatures between 30-35 °F.

Summer temperatures: highs of 73-79 °F, lows of 54-60 °F
5. Lewiston – daily mean temperature of 46.3 °F
Lewiston is the second largest city in Maine. Located halfway between the state’s capital, Augusta, and Portland, Lewiston has even colder winters than Gray, reaching 28-34 °F during the day and 14-21 °F at night. Summers are slightly warmer than in Portland.

Summer temperatures: highs of 74-80 °F, lows of 56-62 °F
6. Augusta – daily mean temperature of 46.1 °F
Augusta, Maine’s capital, has a climate very similar to Lewiston. It has cooler winter temperatures than cities along the coast, between 29-34 °F during the day and 12-20 °F at night. Summer days bring temperatures of 74-80 °F while nights drop to 54-60 °F. It has 34 days of snow which is 11 more than in Lewiston and 5 more than in Portland. Augusta sees 71.3 inches of average annual snowfall.
7. Brunswick – daily mean temperature of 46 °F
Brunswick is a town of 22,000 people, located 27 miles northeast of Portland. While its average high temperatures don’t differ from the previous coastal cities, its average low temperatures are noticeably lower. The weather conditions are thus more severe. In the winter, Brunswick experiences temperatures of 10-18 °F (compared to 16-22 °F in Portland). In the summer, it’s between 53-58 °F (compared to 55-61 °F in Portland).
8. Orono – daily mean temperature of 46 °F
Orono, a town of about 11,000 residents, is located 9 miles northeast of Bangor, the third largest city in Maine. Orono has colder winters and slightly warmer average summer high temperatures of 76-81 °F.
9. Gardiner – daily mean temperature of 45.85 °F
Gardiner is a city of 6,000 people, located 6 miles south of Augusta. Gardiner has higher average high temperatures than Augusta, meaning that it features warmer weather during the day. Nights are colder by up to 2 degrees.
10. New Gloucester – daily mean temperature of 45.85 °F
New Gloucester is a town of about 6,000 inhabitants, located 12 miles southwest of Lewiston. In the winter, it sees average high temperatures of 29-35 °F and average lows of 13-20 °F. In the summer, days reach 74-79 °F while nights drop to 54-60 °F.

I created the table below by researching data for the most populous municipalities in Maine. When I couldn’t find data for a given city, I moved on to another. While the list includes 30 cities, some of the bigger cities may be missing because there was no data for them. Please check the closest geographically city then.
