What Are the Warmest Cities in Germany?

Germany may not be associated with warm, sunny weather but there are some places in the country that feature a surprisingly mild climate.

In this article I’ll share with you my list of the warmest German cities with a population of at least 100,000 people. I’ll cover the top 10 in more detail and then present the entire ranking in a table with 61 major cities in the country.

Top 10 Warmest Cities in Germany

Here are the top 10 warmest places in Germany. They’re ranked by their average annual temperature. Each city also includes average temperatures in the coldest month (January) and in the warmest month (July).

1. Heidelberg – 13.95 °C

Heidelberg is the warmest city in Germany with the highest average temperature. Located in a protected valley between the Pfälzerwald and the Odenwald, Heidelberg has a subtropical climate with mild winters and hot summers. Because of its high temperatures, subtropical plants like almond trees, fig trees, palm trees, olive trees, and grape-bearing vines grow there. There’s even a wild population of African rose-ringed parakeets living there. Heidelberg is also one of the sunniest cities in Germany, getting 2,124 hours of sunshine a year.

2. Offenbach am Main – 13.15 °C

The second hottest city in Germany is Offenbach am Main. Located in the Upper Rhine Plain, it enjoys a humid subtropical climate like Heidelberg. The average maximum temperature in Offenbach am Main in the winter is slightly higher than in Heidelberg. This gives it the mildest winters in Germany. Offenbach am Main is the sunniest city in Germany. It gets 2,415 hours of sunshine a year, which, combined with its average temperatures, makes it have the best climate in Germany.

3. Freiburg im Breisgau – 12.45 °C

Freiburg im Breisgau is a city in southwest Germany’s Black Forest. Because of hot summer months, its climate is also qualified as humid subtropical. The city has mild weather in the winter months, though colder than the first two cities.

4. Leverkusen – 12.25 °C

Leverkusen is a city in North Rhine-Westphalia, bordering the city of Cologne to the south and Düsseldorf to the north. It has a moderate transitional climate between oceanic and continental. It has much cooler summers than the first three cities.

5. Bergisch Gladbach – 12.25 °C

Bergisch Gladbach is another city in the same area as Leverkusen. It has the same climate.

6. Krefeld – 11.55 °C

Krefeld is yet another city in North Rhine-Westphalia, not far from the border with the Netherlands. It features a moderate oceanic climate.

7. Karlsruhe – 11.5 °C

Karlsruhe is a city in southern Germany, and more specifically the southwestern part of the country, near the border with France. With over 300,000 people living there, it’s the most populous warmest city in this ranking. It has cooler winters than the cities in north-west Germany but hotter summers.

8. Pforzheim – 11.5 °C

Pforzheim is a city located 30 km southeast of Karlsruhe and 45 km northwest of Stuttgart. It features the same climate as Karlsruhe but is a much smaller city.

9. Bochum – 11.3 °C

Bochum is another city located in Western Germany, in North Rhine-Westphalia. With over 360,000 residents, it’s the most populous city in this ranking.

10. Gelsenkirchen – 11.3 °C

Gelsenkirchen is another city in the same northwestern region as several of the previous cities. It’s the fifth largest city in the largest urban area of Germany, Ruhr.

Here’s a table with 61 major German cities that have at least 100,000 residents. A few cities are missing because I couldn’t find climate data for them. The data comes from weather data from various climate data providers.
