What Are the Warmest Cities in Delaware?
In this article I’m going to share with you my ranking of the warmest places in Delaware along with their average annual temperatures.
I created my list by researching weather data collected by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and other climate data providers.
Below I’m listing the top 10 warmest places in Delaware that have the highest average yearly temperatures. Later in the article I share a table with 17 most populous cities in Delaware.
Top 10 Warmest Cities in Delaware
Here are the top 10 warmest places in Delaware ranked by their daily mean temperature. The differences are small but still noticeable if you compare the warmest cities with averages of 58.55 °F to the coldest ones (not featured in the top 10 but featured in the table below) with averages of 54.5 °F.
For the top five cities I also give average winter and summer temperatures.
1. Lewes – daily mean temperature of 58.55 °F
Lewes is a city of about 3,000 residents, located in the fast-growing Cape Region. Its weather is moderated by the Atlantic Ocean and the Delaware Bay, giving it a humid subtropical climate with hot summers and mild winters. This climate and the city’s average temperature makes it the warmest city in Delaware (along with the next two places). In the summer months Lewes sees daily highs of 83-88 °F while in the winters the average high temperature reaches 46-50 °F. Average lows in the winter go below freezing in January and February.
Winter temperatures: highs of 46-50 °F, lows of 30-35 °F
Summer temperatures: highs of 83-88 °F, lows of 66-71 °F
2. Bethany Beach – daily mean temperature of 58.5 °F
Bethany Beach, due to its location on the Atlantic coast 19 miles southeast of Lewes, enjoys the same mild climate. Unlike Lewes, Bethany Beach is primarily a resort town, known as one of the “Quiet Resorts.” Its regular population is about 1,000 people. In the peak season, 15,000 more people populate the small town, enjoying warm weather and sunny days on the beach. There’s virtually no difference in climate between Lewes and Bethany Beach (and Dewey Beach on the third spot as well, for that matter).
Winter temperatures: highs of 45-49 °F, lows of 30-34 °F
Summer temperatures: highs of 83-87 °F, lows of 65-70 °F
3. Dewey Beach – daily mean temperature of 58.5 °F
Dewey Beach is situated 8 miles southwest of Lewes, almost in the middle between Lewes and Bethany Beach. It has the same average annual temperature as Bethany Beach. The town is even smaller than Bethany Beach. With just 353 residents, it’s a tiny town even for Delaware averages.
Winter temperatures: highs of 45-49 °F, lows of 30-34 °F
Summer temperatures: highs of 83-87 °F, lows of 65-70 °F
4. Georgetown – daily mean temperature of 57.55 °F
Georgetown lies about 19 miles east of Dewey Beach and is the first city in this ranking that’s not coastal. The main difference between Georgetown and the previous three cities is that its nighttime temperatures are lower by 1-2 degrees. This means cooler winters but also slightly more comfortable summers for those who prefer cooler nights in the warmest months.
Winter temperatures: highs of 45-50 °F, lows of 29-33 °F
Summer temperatures: highs of 83-88 °F, lows of 64-70 °F
5. Dover – daily mean temperature of 57.05 °F
Dover, the capital city of Delaware, is the fifth warmest city of the state. Located a few miles inland from the Delaware Bay, its average weather is about 1-2 degrees cooler during the day and about 2 degrees colder at night than the top 3 cities. Compared to Wilmington, which is the most populous city of Delaware, Dover is 1.5 °F warmer which is particularly noticeable during the winters. In both cities, the hottest month features roughly the same temperatures.
Winter temperatures: highs of 44-49 °F, lows of 28-32 °F
Summer temperatures: highs of 83-87 °F, lows of 64-69 °F
6. Rehoboth Beach – daily mean temperature of 56.95 °F
Rehoboth Beach lies on the Atlantic Ocean, just 3 miles north of Dewey Beach. It’s a small town with a population of about 1,100 people that swells in the summer months because of people who own summer homes there. According to climate data, it has more moderate summers than Dewey Beach, with temperatures reaching 81-85 °F instead of 83-87 °F. If you want to enjoy cooler sunny days on the beach, Rehoboth Beach may be a better option than the previous coastal cities.
7. Smyrna – daily mean temperature of 56.5 °F
Smyrna is situated about 14 miles northwest of Dover. It’s a city of 13,000 inhabitants, with a climate featuring just slightly cooler nights than the capital city of Delaware.
8. Camden – daily mean temperature of 56.5 °F
Camden is a town located 3 miles southwest of Dover. It belongs to Dover Metropolitan Area. It’s just slightly cooler than Dover but otherwise its average weather is virtually the same.
9. Cheswold – daily mean temperature of 56.5 °F
Cheswold is another city neighboring Dover. As Camden, it features virtually the same climate.
10. Wyoming – daily mean temperature of 56.5 °F
Wyoming is the tenth warmest city in Delaware and yet another small town neighboring Dover and sharing the same weather station.
